A novel safety shield design to assist with handling venomous snakes

McKayla M. Spencer, Andy Mueller, C. M. Gienger

Handling venomous snakes can be a dangerous endeavour and the safety of both the handler and the snake should be a priority at all times. We here present our design of a series of plexiglass shields to protect the handler during the process of transferring snakes between cages, transfer containers, or experimental enclosures in the lab. We found that when using the shield device the snake could be manipulated more easily and there was less chance of the snake turning around and exiting the container before a lid could be secured. This safety device is simple and inexpensive to make and has broad applicability to anyone working with venomous snakes in the laboratory environment.
