Abstract

Macedonia, as a part of the Balkan Peninsula, ranks among the most important regions in terms of amphibian and reptilian biodiversity. Thus far, 14 amphibian and 33 reptile species have been found to occur in Macedonia, but with some exceptions among reptiles, the distribution of most of taxa is poorly understood and/or has only rarely been published. We report here records on 9(10) amphibian and 28 reptilian species taken in 2014 at 82 localities covering most of the habitats in Macedonia. The presented observations represent 64.2% and 84.8% of the total known local diversity of herpetofauna. Among all observations, we have recorded new distribution data for 5 species of amphibians and 22 species of reptiles.
